Brigade
History
The Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade was formed by Sunday school teacher Sir W.A. Smith. It is a uniform Christian organization that is denominational, interdenominational, national, and international. Built on the pillars of religion and discipline, the movement spread through missionary efforts. In 1909, Dr. J.W. Arthur started the first PCEA Boys’ Brigade Company at Kikuyu Mission.
Growth
From 1909 to 1965, missionaries established Brigade work in congregations and school mission areas. In 1985, the Eleventh General Assembly instructed the Youth Department to start more companies in all Presbyteries. By 1997, the 15th General Assembly appreciated the introduction of the Brigade in all presbyteries, making it a standing committee of the church.
